Relationships Australia NT is providing free support for people affected by Royal Commission

Free support services for people affected by the Royal Commission

February 14, 2017

Relationships Australia NT has recruited a team of counsellors and Aboriginal Islander Cultural Advisors in Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs to provide free support services to young people, their families and other people affected by the Royal Commission into the Protection and Detention of Children in the Northern Territory.

CEO Marie Morrison said that it was vital that some of the most vulnerable people in our community, who are bravely willing to share their stories, have access to counselling and culturally appropriate support.

“We recognise that young people in particular experience many barriers to seeking help, we aim to strengthen that access by using an outreach program which offers support to clients in places where they feel most comfortable and will also provide on-site support when the public hearings commence.”

“It’s very important that people know and understand that support is available whether you are providing evidence to the Royal Commission or not, the news coverage alone may bring back difficult memories of the situations that the young people or their families faced.”

“Our Aboriginal and Islander Cultural Advisors will work alongside experienced youth friendly counselling staff to ensure that clients receive a trauma informed and culturally competent service.”

Funded by the Department of Social Services, and working in collaboration with Danila Dilba and Central Australian Aboriginal Congress, Relationships Australia is drawing on over 40 years of providing counselling services in the Territory and is well aware of the cultural, linguistic and geographical sensitivities that need to be applied.

The support service is funded until 30 September 2017 and includes; information on how to provide information to the Royal Commission, support through the legal processes, support to those who are giving evidence including their families, mentoring and healing camps on Country.
